Finding our roots...in red dancing boots

documentary feature

dir. Roxy Toporowych

USA 2011

Folk! explores the unique underground world of Ukrainian Folk Dancing in New York City through the eyes of narrator/filmmaker Roxy Toporowych. Featuring the legendary ballerina and choreographer Roma Pryma-Bohachevsky and the Syzokryli Dance Ensemble, this comedy-docudrama is both a Ukrainian diaspora time capsule and a universal story relevant to anyone trying to balance ties to one's heritage in a modern world.

Wishing to celebrate 40 years of teaching folk dance to thousands of students, the legendary Roma Pryma Bohachevska coaxes dancers out of retirement for one final dazzling performance at Lincoln Center, in the hopes that she will find someone to pass her legacy to.

Also featuring the Virsky Dance Ensemble of Kyiv, Ukraine with additional performance footage of Voloshky Dance Ensemble of Philadelphia.

Folk! was part of the East Silver Film Market and Hot Docs Film Market in 2007. In 2011, the film toured Ukraine as part of a cultural exchange sponsored by the US Embassy in Kyiv and later premiered at the White Sands Film Festival and NewFilmmakers NY Film Festival.
